Hi, I'm John Lanza. Every Monday, I share ideas to help you and your family on the money-smart journey. I created "The Money Mammals" for kids and wrote The Art of Allowance book for parents like you. Won't you join me on the money-smart journey?
Money-Smart Mondaywith John Lanza Hello, friends, We call March 15th the "Ides of March." So let's call today, the 15th, the "Ide(a)s of September." Julius Caesar might not approve, but he's not a subscriber. Two quotes about consuming mindfully"People tend to assess the relative importance of issues by the ease with which they are retrieved from memory—and this is largely determined by the extent of coverage in the media."
"You know that song you can't get out of your head? All thoughts work that way. Careful what you read."
We'd be wise to monitor what we let into our heads. Starting seems to be the hardest wordWith the new school year upon us, I read this recently from Wells Fargo: "[Our] survey found that 71% of parents with children ages 5 – 17 give an average weekly allowance of $37, yet 51% of parents struggle to talk about money in a way their kids will understand." $37 a week! When I was a kid, I got a handful of nickels and a pat on the back. If you're struggling, then my book The Art of Allowance is a great place to start. (⚠️Shameless plug alert!) A financial literacy quizA national study. Three questions. (Most adults miss at least one!) No calculators, no Googling. Can you (and your kids) pass this test? Die with ZeroMy podcast club is discussing this conversation with Bill Perkins, author of Die with Zero, this week. Here's Bill from his book: "Money has absolutely no value to you when you're dead—that's why I say you should die with zero. [...] Although we all have at least the potential to make more money in the future, we can never go back and recapture time that is now gone. So it makes no sense to let opportunities pass us by for fear of squandering our money. Squandering our lives should be a much greater worry." Food for thought. Personally, I still plan to splurge on train rides (Bill is also a fan!) and board games along the way. More ideas I found interesting➡️ I love trains, but trains are not the answer to our abundant future. Until next week, enjoy the journey! John, 📗 Get The Art of Allowance (for parents) P.S.
