Money-Smart Mondays

Want to know how one CEO is financially empowering today's youth?

Money-Smart Monday

with John Lanza

Hello, friends,

I'm back from surprisingly not-so-sweltering Savannah, where I spoke to some terrific credit union folks at the SRCUS conference. More on that event below.

But first, my latest podcast episode is fresh off the griddle—and served with a side of unsolicited wisdom.

Step into the mind of a forward-thinking CEO

Steve Bugg and his future-focused team at Great Lakes Credit Union have been working with us since 2021. Steve is an impressively clear communicator about his institution's mission—really about the credit union mission writ large—and he joined me for a conversation about how The Money Mammals® powered by The Art of Allowance™ is helping:

▶️ Amplify Great Lakes' community-focused work

▶️ Encourage not only money-smart knowledge but also behavior change

▶️ Highlight to parents the importance of starting young on the journey to money empowerment

I love talking to money experts, parents and, in this case, both on The Art of Allowance Podcast. Steve even shared lessons learned on his personal financial journey and how having that money smarts has helped with both his son and grandson.

The unstoppable power of habits

While I find all the "I'm thrilled to announce..." and "I'm humbled to have been..." LinkedIn language so cringe, I do want to share a big personal win with you.

It takes a lot of work to prepare just one hour-long talk, let alone two. Still, it's worth it when audience members respond well and walk away as better versions of themselves. In my new talk, "The Unstoppable Power of Habits," I tapped into my two decades of experience helping kids develop money-smart habits and oodles of reading and personal research on habit building. Every attendee not only learned how habits are built or broken but also completed my new Habit Helper Handout to get started creating habits that help and crushing those that don't.

Here's what some attendees had to say:

"Spirited simplified summary of what making new habits are all about, no need to read 100 books or watch 100 videos, John has done that for you."
—Mike H.
"Session was great. Very engaging. Very thought-provoking. Would definitely attend another session."
—Wes G.
"I can use it all!"
—Lannie S.

Let me know if you'd like me to bring "The Unstoppable Power of Habits" to your conference or organization.

I'll share more about my second talk next week.

PNEL is better than BNPL

By now (Or should I say, "Buy now"?) we know our kids should be very, very wary of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) schemes, which I've talked about here and here. We also know the book Happy Money gives us ways we can, in fact, use money to buy ourselves a little happiness. For example:

"It's difficult to overcome the power of now, but it's possible to harness this force. As the pleasures and pains of the present appear particularly intense in the mind's eye, we are most reluctant to make purchases when the pain of paying is immediate and the pleasure of consuming distant. Businesses recognize this psychological phenomenon, which has driven the development of financial and technological innovations that enable people to consume sooner and pay later. By putting this fundamental principle into reverse, you can buy more happiness while spending less money."

Let's call this tactic Pay Now, Enjoy Later (PNEL). Rather than financing a new gadget we don't need or paying for a fancy dinner we can't afford to impress people we may not even like, we can buy tickets to a show far in advance or prepay all our vacation expenses. A win-win.

More ideas I found interesting

➡️ Monarch Money is a suitable replacement for anyone who misses Mint.
➡️ The HBO Max Billy Joel documentary is fabulous.
➡️ Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin: What a read!

Until next week, enjoy the journey!

John,
Your Chief Mammal
