Money-Smart Mondays

What if success is just ... feeling good about ourselves?

Money-Smart Monday

with John Lanza

Hello, friends,

I'm preparing for two hour-long presentations at the 2025 Southeast Regional Directors' Conference next week. The first is new: a keynote on "The Unstoppable Power of Habits." The second, "Kids These Days," is about helping credit unions connect with Gen Z and Gen Alpha (and their parents). You can find out more about both on my speaker page.

These presentations require a LOT of prep—which is both exciting and exhausting—so I'm going to keep this week's newsletter short. Here are a few things I've noticed lately that I want to share.

Keeping up with the Joneses

Art of Allowance Podcast guest Will Rainey's terrific LinkedIn post features a useful, simple visual that shows us why keeping up with the Joneses is a game no one can win. This illustration pairs well with these wise words from Warren Buffett's late partner:

"The world is not driven by greed. It's driven by envy."
Charlie Munger

What our partners are saying

This week I posted about the wonderful work of several of our outstanding partners: SECNY, Community Choice and Maine Family. These credit unions are all making a difference in the communities they serve by making family financial wellness fun and engaging.

A useful definition of success

I've always liked the way the author of How to Raise Successful People defines "success":

"When we believe in our dreams and have the support to achieve those dreams, while feeling pretty good about ourselves."
—Esther Wojcicki

She knows what she's talking about. Two of her daughters became Silicon Valley CEOs, and the other is a Fulbright-winning anthropologist.

As always, enjoy the journey!
